Shadow of Survival
July 2022 | Pongola Game Reserve, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
Perched on a dead tree, this white-backed vulture rests in monochrome stillness, an ancient figure in a world that’s moving too fast. Of the six vulture species found in South Africa, all now face a future marked by vulnerability, endangerment, or extinction. This image is a quiet reminder that not all losses leave loudly. Some disappear slowly, feather by feather, shadow by shadow.

WIDE-EYED WONDER
October 2022 | Lammermoor Country Estate, Gauteng, South Africa
Perched in an owl box with bright yellow eyes and a comical look of shock, this young eagle owl locked eyes with the lens—beak open, mid-surprise. I had to climb onto the roof to get this shot, but that priceless expression made every wobble worth it.

NOCTURNE FOR MY FATHER
October 2021 | Lammermoor Country Estate, Gauteng, South Africa
This image was taken in the backyard of my farmholding in South Africa, just weeks after my father passed away on 17 September 2021. He was a jazz musician who lived much of his life at night... his world was rhythm, quiet, and moonlight. For a month after his passing, I kept seeing owls. This southern white-faced owl visited for several days and nights, often just watching, silent and still. It felt like something more than coincidence.
A quiet presence. A last set. A sign. This image, and this moment, will always be his.

THE SECOND VERSE
October 2021 | Lammermoor Country Estate, Gauteng, South Africa
A closer look at the southern white-faced owl who visited me in the weeks after my father's passing. Still, watchful, and quietly present... this portrait feels like a continuation of something already spoken. A second verse to a song only I was meant to hear.

WHEN THE OWLS CAME
September 2021 | Lammermoor Country Estate, Gauteng, South Africa
In September, the month my father passed away, an eagle owl arrived just as the golden hour faded, taking its place in the quiet of early evening. Perched and still, it stared straight at me. In the hush of that moment, it felt like more than chance, a feathered sentinel standing watch over a time of mourning.
